Title: Map Expansion
Post by: xiaoguard on August 14, 2016, 11:37:03 AM
If the map were to be expanded, what town/area would you want to see next?
I know that making a new map and expanding to Swamp is on the table, but are there any other ideas?

South / Swamp Town / Destiny was the plan. Though it wouldn't be an expansion, but a separate map (supports custom tilesets).

I thought we didn't like Destiny?  ;D

Onnet, MoD town and tribal village. Only expansions to the current map I could see being done.
I would have liked to add a nafets river valley to the east of master Lis as a separate map based on Zols underground river and the Zora village from 1999 or so.

Edit: Would adding under water levels count as a map expansion?

I support adding underwater levels. The Zorbis need a place to idle.

I don't understand the aversion to playerhouses in regards to expansion. I've seen UN referenced as being a cluttered mess, but UN also did it badly. A decent sized, albeit empty and moderately detailed overworld level could be designed deliberately with playerhouses/player made content in mind, slap link between the map and that, and it keeps everything concise, encourages player involvement, and expands the map with new things to look at without taking attention from real development - all while both being tidy and out of the way so player content isn't distracting or bothering people who don't like it. Someone could even be hired as a sort of QA, if you wanted to make sure the levels were up to snuff.

Personally, if I were to implement playerhouses, I would do apartments. Just add a building with a shit ton of doors, and if someone wants a playerhouse they can talk to staff and have one put in one of the doors. A door locking and unlocking system would be fairly easy to do too.

Sticking them in apartments actively encourages players to not explore new areas. R2R on UN was stupid. There were tons of phenomenal levels, but no one ever checked because outwardly it was just a bunch of identical doors. Apartments are great when the level serves a function, such as storing items on a server like Era or GK. Having a playerlevel "district" map lets there be some kind of illustrated growth and encourages players take up development and exploration, while also making it something easily ignorable by players who are uninterested.

Oh, true.
In that case, a player level map would be very cool.

When I was working on the south map I planned to make areas specifically for playerhouses.

How complete is the south map? Would it be viable to finish it?

Far far away. I just meant we've always planned to introduce playerhouses, just never got to the point.

If not playerhouses, guild houses should definitely be readded. Especially if our competitive guild thing takes off.

We're looking into adding some areas with space for playerhouses.

I personally would like to see Snow Town return, just for tileset variety.
